Thanks to our close contact with constructors and operators, we are familiar with the needs of the industry and develop appropriate preassembled system solutions for both parties including an OEM version for initial installation and a complete system solution for retrofitting. In addition to the pump, grinder or solid matter feeder, all components such as valves and sensors come already installed and connected. Vogelsang tests the entire unit for quality assurance at the factory before delivery.

For easy retrofitting, the unit simply needs to be installed and connected to the power grid. It is then immediately ready for operation. Utilizing a ProfiNet connection the system can quickly and easily network with the existing plant control.

The OEM version is designed to fit the needs of constructors where core components and sensors are also tested at the factory before delivery. The final installation steps involve the plant manufacturer installing the system on-site, taking over the setup and connection to the power distribution system and setting up the variable frequency drive, operating components and safety technology. Both preassembled solutions will provide a seamless installation.

Industry

Industrial applications from the chemical and oil industries to the food sector must meet specific and stringent requirements when it comes to production and disposal processing. This means utilizing reliable and efficient pumping technology that can not only handle abrasive, aggressive or highly viscous media but also adapt to the medium. This is especially true when it comes to processing by-products from food. In this latest eNews edition, you’ll read about our solutions for processing the raw materials from fish waste as well as using highly efficient pumping in the sugar industry.

Fish waste is a valuable resource. When processing fresh fish, naturally a lot of waste is generated, as only the fillet is needed for food production. Heads, bones, fins and organs are removed and considered as waste. However, this waste still contains many important raw materials, such as fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids, which are becoming more and more important as a raw material. Many large fishing vessels process the fish directly on the ship, as they are often non-stop out on the sea. In the cramped space onboard, efficient use of the available space is necessary.

The industrial grinding system RedUnit from Vogelsang is designed to manage these needs. It unites several grinding and pumping solutions in one device. The RedUnit is a modular system that can be tailored to the individual needs of the customer. Of course, it can also be used in fish factories based onshore to process the resulting fish waste into a pumpable suspension and to simplify the handling of the raw material enormously.

The function of the RedUnit in detail

The first step is feeding the hopper with the media for processing, in this case, fish waste. If needed, a rotary lobe pump of the VX series can pump additional fluid to the grinding process inside the RedUnit. This is followed by a rough crushing of the contents through the XRipper XRL twin-shaft grinder. Since its grinding tools are made of a block of special steel, it is particularly robust. Their monolithic construction ensures that the torque is transmitted evenly along the entire length from the shaft to the rotors. This allows higher loads and a more powerful grinding so even stubborn materials are reduced to a defined size. The downstream pumping technology is protected and failures due to blockages can be avoided, which increases the plant availability. After this reduction step, the CC-series progressive cavity pump can already pump the mixture to the next process step or storage location.

To obtain an even smaller particle size, the RedUnit can be expanded to include the RotaCut RCX macerator. Depending on the requirements, this can be connected upstream or downstream of the CC pump. As you can see the RedUnit is a versatile and robust solution for processing fish waste.

As the name suggests, sugar cane and beet have particularly high sugar content. To get it into the crystalline form as we know it, the sugar has to be extracted. In the different process steps, various masses are created and in each step, the sugar content increases. Step by step, the raw juice becomes thinner and gradually turns into thick juice or syrup and, finally, turns into a semi-solid mixture known as massecuite. The result of the last step is sugar and molasses.

The sugar-containing mass has become increasingly viscous with every production step and has been processed further at higher temperatures. The content of abrasive substances such as sugar crystals is also increasing. Therefore, the demands of a feed pump in the sugar industry are very high. The Vogelsang VX-series rotary lobe pump performs well even under these rough conditions. Its HiFlo pistons can be selected so that they are optimally equipped for the special characteristics of the pumped medium in every process step. Thanks to their highly efficient, yet low-pulsation pumping and comparatively low speed, Vogelsang rotary lobe pumps are particularly suitable for use in the sugar industry.

Wastewater

Changing demographics and lifestyles are continuously influencing wastewater collection and purification. Safe and reliable wastewater disposal becomes more important for the protection of waterways and the environment but also the maintenance of the quality of life in general. At the same time, wastewater transport in the sewage system and treatment in the sewage treatment plant should be energy-efficient and therefore resource-friendly.

Collaborating with our customers, knowing their needs and considering them during research and development are the base for several of our innovations and reputation as a reliable partner for the wastewater segment. Our venture into the wastewater industry was supported by early adopters in using our pumps in sewage treatment applications. Read how Vogelsang’s wastewater pumping and grinding technology took over the world in this eNews edition.

At the time of the invention of the elastomer-coated rotary lobe pump in 1970, Vogelsang was still mostly focused on agricultural technology and they were not being used within the wastewater sector. Not until some wastewater practitioners became aware of these small, powerful pumps did the triumph of Vogelsang products in the sewage industry begin.

A few years later wastewater technology grew to become a second revenue stream for the company. Collaborating closely with customers, new products and a dedicated sales team with sewage expertise was established, which helped to speed up the research and development of new technologies. For example, the concept of the RotaCut macerator, is recognized by many in the wastewater market as a state-of-the-art technology for sludge treatment. Other products such as the XRipper twin shaft grinder for an economical solution against wet wipes and the BioCrack electrokinetic disintegration system reinforce Vogelsang’s reputation as a reliable partner for the wastewater segment worldwide.

Understanding customer needs, thinking ahead and contributing innovations are important factors that have contributed to Vogelsang’s success. Vogelsang always sees its machines from the customers’ perspective and considers their needs as part of its ongoing research and development, which results in continuously developing ideas and products.

The sewage treatment plant of the city of Freiberg is designed for up to 25,000 population equivalents. In addition to the mechanical, biological and chemical treatment stages, the treatment plant includes an anaerobic sludge stabilization process. To reduce the amount of sewage sludge, there was a plan to increase the DM content in the digestion tower by dewatering a part of the sludge and then returning it to the digestion tower. As multiple progressive cavity pumps were already in use, the plans also included installing another pump of this kind.

Wastewater manager Sternkiker discovered the IQ series rotary lobe pump at an event. The compact construction, the flexible connectors and the high resistance to the foreign matter provided by the integrated InjectionSystem convinced him to choose the IQ series rotary lobe pump for this respective dewatering task. Following the implementation of the IQ rotary lobe pump, the DM content has successfully increased and the sewage sludge has already been reduced. Meanwhile, the IQ rotary lobe pump runs trouble-free and has made a significant contribution to improving the overall digestion.
