Agricultural technology

When Vogelsang invented dribble bar technology in 1980, it became possible for the first time to use liquid manure – which contains valuable nutrients – in a truly economical manner and to spread it in an environmentally friendly way. Precision distribution and spreading played a central role influencing the design of our machines and components for liquid manure management. Read in this eNews edition how a range of working techniques all play a role in precise and sustainable liquid manure management.

Since inventing the dribble bar technology in 1980, precision has played an essential role for Vogelsang. Right from the start, this has been the company’s decisive factor, influencing the design of its machines for liquid manure management. Precision begins with the filling of the tanker. Rotary lobe pumps have become an essential liquid manure technology, especially in the use of tankers. In comparison to vacuum systems, rotary lobe pumps transport the liquid manure from the tanker to the distribution and spreading system more precisely and in line with requirements. This is because the pumps ensure exact volume regulation through speed variations.

The RotaCut, a wet cutter with an integrated heavy material separator, reliably shreds fibrous and other impurities in the liquid manure and ensures a homogeneous medium with better flow characteristics. This makes it easier and more reliable to pump the liquid manure. With precision distributors like ExaCut or DosiMat, the liquid manure is evenly distributed to the discharge hoses.

At Vogelsang, all precision distributors have excellent coefficients of variation. This shows just how highly precise the functioning of the distributor head is. The Vogelsang dribble bar and trailing shoe systems also stand for precision in spreading and distribution accuracy. The well-thought-out hose installation simultaneously makes it possible for the liquid manure to reach the ground while ensuring even plant growth.

The approach V is avoided. Above all, the new BlackBird trailing shoe system is designed for maximum precision. Through active pressure, the sharpened runner penetrates better into the soil and carves a narrow strip for direct liquid manure placement under the plants.
The perfect interplay of these precise working techniques – from filling to spreading – enables the nutrients to be placed entirely where the plant needs them. Precision is a decisive factor for economical fertilization that is friendly toward the soil, plants and environment.

Precision distribution and spreading played a central role in the development of dribble bar technology. We talked about this with the inventor of dribble bar technology himself, Burkhard Verhülsdonk.

Mr Verhülsdonk, why was new spreading technology needed back then?
Until the 1980s, liquid manure was usually spread using a splash plate by both vacuum tankers and pump tankers. It was simple and cheap. However, external factors such as wind had a significant impact on the reliability of this spreading technology...

BiogasTec Case Study

Since May 2011 Bioenergie BAGUS operates a 600 kW biogas plant in Malente, Germany. About 13 tons of liquid manure and about 25 tons of solids are fed into the plant each day. While the plant performs well overall, the operator identified an opportunity for further optimization on the central pump, which is in charge of several tasks. Above all functions, the pump needs to operate around 11 hours per day. However, during winter, the pumps need to run up to 24 hours per day.

The pump was not running smoothly, and the rotary lobes required frequent replacement. The operator looked closer into the issue and contacted Vogelsang for a consultation. Upon reviewing the plant together, they discovered outgassing in the pipe system. The connectors of the pump were modified to enable the pump to handle the gas. This small modification instantly increased the pump's capacity and extended the lobes' service life. Vogelsang offers individual advice on how to optimize best the digestion line of your biogas plant as well as a range of service options.

Industry

The processing or treatment of food waste is not just a matter for the waste management industry. Food producers must also decide which grinder and pumps to use, since this waste can be used as a secondary source of income. For reasons of economy, combined machines with a pump and upstream macerator are also a proven solution in this area. Read how a UK-based poultry processing company utilizes the RedUnit as a linked shredding and pumping system to treat the waste more economically.

The food processing industry is attempting to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and find ways to reuse waste. Although there are waste management options, how does technology play a role here? A UK-based poultry processing company prepares whole chickens to the final finished product for retail. However, chickens that fall to the ground or are damaged in the process are sorted out, creating around one ton of waste per hour.

The meat waste is delivered to a third party for use as pet food, but the bulky carcasses cause high storage and transport costs. For this reason, the company decided to treat the waste more economically and efficiently by implementing the Vogelsang RedUnit with the XRipper XRL twin-shaft grinder and an eccentric screw pump.

The XRipper processes bones, skin, intestines and meat at a velocity adapted to the fabrics so that the feed pump can run at a constant speed. The shredder withstands higher loads and enables up to 80 chickens to be processed in 1.5 min. As a result, more mass can be stored and transported in containers leading to lower transportation costs. Since the RedUnit does not require any additional downstream pumps or feed screws, the operation also saves space, energy and time.

Incorporating technology to process food material in a very defined and reliable way is an integral part of waste management in the food processing industry. Learn more about the RedUnit and read the full case study on the UK-based poultry processing company.

Wastewater

Safe and reliable wastewater disposal becomes more critical for the protection of waterways and the environment. At same time, wastewater transport in the sewage system and treatment in the sewage treatment plant should be energy-efficient using the right technology that guarantees high operational reliability to combat with any kind of foreign material.

In this latest eNews edition, we talk about the use of storm tanks in combatting with the great water inflow from heavy rainstorms. IMESAPI Groupe in Spain uses a special Vogelsang pump system for the storm tank drainage.

Unexpected rainstorms are becoming more frequent, and experts believe that climate change will increase the number and intensity of heavy rain events. Heavy rain causes more damage than any other natural events in many countries. The large amounts of sudden water inflow often overstrain wastewater systems. Municipalities and many cities are not sufficiently prepared enough for these rainstorms. This can lead to flooding and consequently to great damage to property and people, particularly in cities, due to their dense population and their predominantly sealed surfaces.

Bigger pipelines or canals may allow rainwater to drain more quickly, but the provision of buffer capacities is a crucial second part to control the masses of surplus water. As the rainwater flows at high speed through the streets and channels, it carries away diverse solids and garbage. This is why operating such buffer tanks need robust and reliable technology.

IMESAPI Groupe operates the biggest storm tank in Madrid, Spain, and they were forced to execute special cleaning and emptying actions to avoid malfunctions and maintain effectiveness. Upon looking for solutions, they decided on a unique Vogelsang pump system for the storm tank drainage of the Butarque, including a VX rotary lobe pump and an Inline RotaCut macerator. The rotary lobe pump can pump very viscous fluids even fibrous sludge with high solid content. The sludge passes through the Vogelsang macerator before the pump where stones and metal pieces are separated, and rags are chopped down efficiently. As a result, the pump system saves IMESAPI Groupe a lot of effort and money.

Storm tank Case Study

A service provider for waste management operates a center where garbage and reusable bags are stored outside for disposal, treatment and recycling. Surface water that accumulates on the sealed, outdoor storage surfaces needs to be collected, treated and pumped to the local sewage system. The operating system for such a process must perform reliably every day of the year.

During heavy rain events, a large amount of disruptive matter flushes into the treatment system from the surface water. Bands or tape-like material clump together along with other substances and lead to blockages of pumps, valves and bents. Additionally, in the event of a malfunction, untreated surface water contaminates the already pretreated water,  which means that the complete water needs to pass through the system again. Because of the narrow shaft, the customer requires a compact solution to solve the problem reliably and economically. Learn how the XRipper XRP reduced solids, protected the pumps and prevented blockages.
