Improving waste management technology through innovation!
The International Trade Fair for the Meat Industry (IFFA) will open its doors from May 4 to 9 at the exhibition grounds in Frankfurt, Germany. With around 1,000 exhibitors and 60,000 expected visitors, IFFA is the premier networking event for the meat industry. Every three years, exhibitors from the meat-processing industry to the food trade and packaging present their innovations and products on the huge 119,000-square meter exhibition grounds. This is where the sector's major trends for the coming years are first unveiled.
This year Vogelsang will showcase its meat-processing products and solutions at IFFA for the first time. All eyes will be on the RedUnit, a modular solid-matter shredder.
Vogelsang GmbH & Co.KG, based in Essen, Oldb., is a specialist for individually configurable ma-chines, plants and systems for the industrial, wastewater, agricultural, biogas and transport sectors.
The company's most popular products include the elastomer-coated rotary lobe pump – invented by Vogelsang. – as well as industrial shredders and liquid manure, wastewater treatment plant and bio-gas technology. as Additionally, their wide ranging portfolio includes products for servicing, supplying and waste disposal for buses and trains.
RedUnit makes less work of abattoir waste
The work performed in abattoirs and meat-processing plants is challenging – and it's hard on the ma-chines that convey and process abattoir waste. But this is no problem at all for the extremely durable pumps and shredders in Vogelsang’s RedUnit!
Thanks to the individual combination of progressive cavity pumps and a robust twin-shaft shredder and optional macerator, the all-in-one unit reliably breaks down tough food wastes of any kind. Straightforward maintenance is a key feature and one that’s synonymous with the Vogelsang name. Regardless of the components selected, the design ensures the unit is always easy to open and has fewer individual parts than usual.
Sophisticated combination of pump and shredding technology
Waste matter containing bones, hooves, horns, feathers and innards poses a major challenge to shredding equipment and pumps. At the same time, in order to actually reuse these materials, they must often be shredded down to a defined size, which must not exceed a certain maximum size. The proper sequence of procedures for effective “recycling” of abattoir waste and byproducts therefore varies depending on the properties of the solid matter being shredded, and on the desired output.
From poultry and pork abattoirs to gelatin production: companies with a wide range of different re-quirements for meat and its processing already rely on the RedUnit from Vogelsang. For example, in 2018 a poultry processing company based in the United Kingdom decided in favor of a combined unit consisting of the XRipper XRL shredder and a CC-series progressive cavity pump from Vogelsang.
In the plant, chickens are slaughtered and the meat is prepared for the retail sector. Chickens that are damaged during processing or fall on the ground are removed from the line. With a weekly throughput of up to two million whole chickens, there is a significant quantity of reject waste: around a ton of waste per hour, which is then destined to be processed for the pet food market.
The RedUnit from Vogelsang enables the company to successfully handle ongoing shredding and conveyance of the poultry waste. The XRipper processes the reject waste at a speed that is adjusted to the requirements of the material, enabling the pump to run at a constant speed. The XRipper's shredding tools are produced from a single block of special steel. This monolithic design ensures consistent transmission of the torque across the entire shaft length to the rotors, which means the shredder can manage highly challenging loads and can process up to 80 chickens in just a minute and a half.
Vogelsang at IFFA 2019
Interested operators of abattoirs and meat-processing plants can witness first-hand the unique combination of shredding and pumping systems. The advantages of the RedUnit speak for themselves: Modular design enables individually-tailored solutions for customers, low power and water consumption, robust shredding thanks to the monolithic XRipper design as well as extremely easy commissioning using an intelligent control system and plug-and-play solution.
