Vogelsang’s Red Unit® Creates a New Category for Processing Solids

| Company, Industry, Wastewater, USA

Vogelsang is known for its VX and IQ pumps. It is also known for its XRL and XRC Twin-Shaft Grinders. Its third product line, the RCX RotaCut® combines Vogelsang pumping technology with a macerator.  Now there is yet another Vogelsang innovation in the marketplace that combines all three technologies – pump, grinder and macerator into one unit. This is the Vogelsang RedUnit is a powerful innovation that combines two stages of grinding to turn solid matter into pumpable material with a defined particle size.

Uniquely engineered

The RedUnit can be used on dry or wet material and is ideal for organic waste in the food industry including vegetable and fruit waste, abettor waste from chicken, pig and beef processing, fish waste and crops such as sugar beets, carrots and cabbage.

A triple-threat to solids

The unit begins with a Vogelsang XRipper that receives solids through a screw or belt conveyor into the RedUnit’s hopper. Multiple hopper designs are available depending on the individual application process.  The XRipper provides the first line of solids reduction. After this first process, additional liquid can be added to the solids. The RedUnit then utilizes Vogelsang’s RotaCut technology to further reduce the media into defined particle size, all the way down to a little as 1/8”.  A Vogelsang pump then carries the reduced waste to the discharge line where it can be disposed or easily treated for further uses.

Advantages aplenty

The biggest advantages of the RedUnit are:

  • Increased energy efficiency and minimum maintenance.
  • Since it is a complete unit, there is no need for additional pumps or screw conveyers between the shredding stages, thus lowering electricity consumption.
  • Compact design with small footprint (about 8’ x 4’) leads to easy integration into existing process.
  • Vogelsang uses its advanced sealing technology, the cartridge mechanical seal that incorporates all seal components in one. This ensures that all elements are replaced in one unit when the cartridge is changed.

Customized to a customer’s needs

RedUnit design is modular and can be tailored to the customer’s requirements. Depending on the particle size requirements, a single stage solid reduction RedUnit is an option. If a specific solid size is not required, an X-Ripper twin shaft grinder can be combined with a pump.  If a specific solid size is required, the RotaCut macerator is recommended to be combined with a pump.

Vogelsang provides complete control systems for the RedUnit, including flow meters, sensors and valves that can be integrated into existing controls or be operated completely independently. Controls include HMI touch screens and remote access capability.

Easy maintenance

Maintenance on the RedUnit is a breeze.  All components can be serviced without being removed from the assembly.  Each piece can be serviced in as little as an hour, ensuring that equipment spends more time processing and less time being serviced.

Proven success

Customers find the RedUnit convenient because it is one compact and sturdy engineered unit. Two installations have been:

  • Slaughterhouse waste processing including bones, innards and skin for overall volume reduction as well as particle reduction for further processing (cattle feed, pet food, fat and oil extraction).
  • Vegetable and fruit processing waste solid particle size reduction (rinds, peels, cores, seeds) to required size to be able to discharge into local sewer system.
