RedUnit: Powerful shredding of food waste
Case Study: A poultry processing plant
The customer and the problem
A poultry processing company prepares whole chickens for retail, from the delivery of the live animals to the finished end product. Chickens that fall on the floor or are damaged as a result of the process are filtered out by the company. This produces around a ton of waste per hour.
The poultry processing company had the meat waste delivered to an external company in bulk. Here, it was disintegrated for use in the animal feed market. The bulky cadavers were causing high storage and transport costs.
The solution
In 2018, the company sought a more efficient and cost-effective way to manage poultry waste generated during food processing. To improve operations, it installed the RedUnit from Vogelsang, featuring the twin-shaft RedUnit XRL industrial grinder and a CC Series progressive cavity pump.
The RedUnit reliably shreds and pumps poultry waste, including bones, innards and meat, without disruption. By processing material at a rate matched to the application, it ensures a consistent flow and allows the pump to operate at a constant speed. Designed to handle demanding loads, the system can process up to 80 chickens in just one and a half minutes.
The shredding process also optimises storage and transport by enabling more material to fit within existing containers, helping to reduce transport costs. As the RedUnit combines shredding and pumping in one compact system, there is no need for additional downstream pumps or screw conveyors, saving valuable space, energy and time.
